Mandarin Peel explores memories and dreams of childhood, focussing on the experiences of two girls in the dry Australian summer. Two young friends silently interact with each other and the landscape, making their mark, they hoard objects, sharing, bonding and touching the natural and the unnatural in their midst. The film explores the innocence of childhood, the kinship of the young, instinctual reactions, sensations, shifting boundaries, violence and forgiveness. The children of Mandarin Peel serve as metaphors for Australia itself, its exploration of identity, forging relationships, inventing history and future.
